Frequently Asked Questions

Am I allowed to have a fire in the borough?

Fires are not permitted in the borough except for wood or charcoal fires in fireplaces or in other containers used for the purposes of a cookout or a barbecue. No paper boxes, rubbish, garbage, leaves or other yard debris are to be burned at any time. Fines and other costs may be imposed for violation of Southmont Borough Ordinance. No. 435.

Are permits required to have a yard sale?

No, a permit is not required for a yard sale. We just ask that you keep vehicles parked to where traffic can still move freely on the street.

What can I do with my Christmas tree after the holidays?

Christmas trees will be picked up by the Public Works Department the first three Fridays in January. Place trees at the curb Friday morning

Am I allowed to walk my pet without a leash?

All animals are to be kept under restraint, licensed or unlicensed (Ordinance #374). Animals are to be held in leash and under control of the owner or attendant of such animals. The animals' owners are responsible for removing any defecation on properties other than their own, and are subject to fines up to $300.00 if they do not comply. Be kind and remember your neighbors and friends who also like to walk along the streets, sidewalks and in the parks. 

 

Remember you must carry clean-up equipment when you are walking your dog. According to Ordinance #374 and #419,

 

  • No person shall permit their dog to run at large upon public places, streets, alleys, sidewalks, or private property of others.

  • Dogs must be restrained with a leash not exceeding 6 feet in length at all times while on public places.

  • No person shall allow their animal to defecate on said properties without immediate cleanup, removal and proper disposal of feces.

 

 

Violaters are subject to fines and penalties.

​Is it my responsibility to maintain the sidewalk along my property?​

Current Borough Ordinance (#'s 39, 397 and 403) provides that all owners (or agent of owner), with property abutting or fronting upon any street, are required to keep the public walkway immediately abutting their property in good repair. 

​

Sidewalks shall be installed one foot from the front boundary line of the property. Sidewalks shall be five feet in width and shall be constructed only of four inch thick concrete or standard paving brick. Blacktop or other similar materials are not permitted for construction of sidewalks.
