Help Grow and Protect Southmont's Urban Forest

 

Southmont Borough is pleased to host a Tree Tenders Training on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Southmont Borough Municipal Building.

The training is presented by ISA Certified Arborists through Penn State Extension and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Bureau of Forestry/TreeVitalize.

The Tree Tenders program empowers volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to plant, care for, and advocate for trees in their communities. Whether you simply enjoy trees or are interested in becoming more involved in urban forestry, this training provides valuable information for volunteers of all experience levels.

Who Should Attend?

 

Everyone is welcome to attend, with preference given to Southmont Borough residents. This training is especially beneficial for:

• Residents interested in volunteering with Borough tree planting and maintenance projects

• Individuals interested in serving on the Southmont Borough Shade Tree Commission

• Master Gardeners

• Garden Club members

• Parks and Trails staff and volunteers

• Anyone interested in learning more about proper tree care

• Individuals considering a career in arboriculture or pursuing certification as an arborist
   

What You'll Learn

 

Participants will receive instruction on topics including:

• Tree biology and identification

• Proper tree planting techniques

• Young tree care and maintenance

• Tree pruning basics

• Mulching and watering

• Recognizing common tree issues

• Community tree stewardship

• The pathway to becoming a Certified Arborist

The training includes both classroom instruction and outdoor, hands-on activities. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
